The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have formally notified the federal government of a 14-day national strike. They underscored the non-implementation of a 16-point agreement forged on October 2, 2023, as the primary reason for their action. Expressing disappointment, the TUC and NLC leadership noted the government’s perceived indifference towards the nation’s widespread suffering despite efforts to preserve industrial harmony.

In a statement, the unions highlighted the agreement’s aim to alleviate the socioeconomic repercussions of the IMF/World Bank-induced PMS price hike and naira devaluation, which have severely impacted Nigerians.

Regretting the necessity of their action due to persistent neglect of citizens’ welfare and escalating hardships, the unions issued a stern ultimatum to the federal government to fulfill its obligations within 14 days, starting from February 9, 2024, in recognition of the urgency to safeguard the rights and dignity of Nigerian workers and citizens.
