In response to the nationwide strike set to commence on November 14, 2023, the Minister of Labour, Employment, and Productivity, Simon Lalong, has initiated a meeting with leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress.

Expected to take place on Tuesday, the meeting aims to address the concerns raised by the labour unions, including the assault on NLC President Joe Ajaero in Owerri, Imo State, and unresolved labour issues in Imo.

TUC President Festus Osifo affirmed the strike’s continuation until government responsibility is acknowledged, while the Presidency denounces the planned strike, viewing it as an attempt to blackmail the government.

Meanwhile, the police’s handling of Ajaero’s situation and the broader strike issue has sparked a nationwide directive from the NLC and TUC, instructing workers to withdraw their services from midnight on November 13, 2023.

The Presidency contends that the strike is an undue punishment for the entire nation over a personal matter, emphasizing ongoing investigations and denouncing the abuse of privilege by labour leaders.
