Nigeria’s top 10 oldest universities
Nigeria has a huge number of universities, most of which are under the government’s ownership and administration. Universities, polytechnics, and other institutions make up the higher education sector.
In Nigeria, there are currently close to 170 universities, both public and private. Today, we’ll discuss the ten oldest universities in Nigeria, all of which are government owned and controlled and were established during the 1940s and 1970s.

1. University of Ibadan
When the University of Ibadan was first founded in 1948, it was a college of the University of London. However, in 1962, it gained independence. The university began with programs in the arts and the medical sciences, and it now offers a wide range of courses through 17 faculties, including arts, medicine, dentistry, renewable natural resources, economics, technology, and clinical sciences.
The University of Ibadan is the oldest institution in Nigeria that grants degrees.

2. University of Lagos
The University of Lagos, a public research university that was established in Lagos in 1962, is one of Nigeria’s first-generation and oldest universities. The university has three campuses on the mainland and about 15 residence halls for students. It has trained many notable Nigerians, including a Nobel laureate as well as doctors, lawyers, and many other professions.
3. Obafemi Awolowo University
The University of Ife, which was established in 1961, was renamed Obafemi Awolowo University in 1987 in honor of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. There are nine residence halls available at this federal university. OAU has trained individuals in a variety of fields, including law, business, and technology.

4. University of Benin
The Institute of Technology was formerly known as the University of Benin, a federal university that was established in 1970. It can be found in Benin City on Ugbowo Lagos Road.
There are 13 faculties of the University of Benin, including schools of the arts, agriculture, education, life sciences, law, management, pharmacy, physical sciences, social sciences, medicine, and engineering.
5. University of Nigeria
Nnamdi Azikiwe founded the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1955. It is a federal university that is situated in Nsukka, Enugu. The university has four campuses: Nsukka and Enugu, Ituku – Ozalla, and ABA.
6. University of Calabar
One of Nigeria’s second generation universities, the University of Calabar was established in 1975 and is located in Calabar, Cross River state.
Allied Medical Sciences, Basic Medical Sciences, Dentistry, Medicine, Management Sciences, Education, Social Sciences, Arts, Public Policy and Administration, Law, Physical Sciences, Engineering and Technology, Environmental Sciences, Pharmacy, Agriculture, Forestry, and Wildlife Management are some of the university’s 16 faculties.
7. Maiduguri University
Northeastern Nigeria’s Borno state is home to the federal institution known as the University of Maiduguri, which was established in 1975. There are 12 faculties in total at this university, including those for veterinary medicine, dentistry, engineering, law, management science, and agriculture.
There is a sizable staff at the university. The University of Maiduguri has a low tuition so that many Nigerians can afford it, just as a typical federal university in Nigeria. The institution provides a number of degrees in the social sciences, the sciences, and other fields of study.

8. Ahmadu Bello University
The Ahmadu Bello University, which was established in 1962 and is based in Zaria, Kaduna state, has 82 departments and 13 faculties in total. Because it is extremely tough and has an excellent reputation, Ahmadu Bello University is one of the most difficult universities in Nigeria to get into.
ABU offers its students a solid road system, a good library, and hostels. As at most federal colleges, the tuition and fees are quite reasonable at less than 70,000 naira.
9. Ilorin University
The University of Ilorin was established in 1975 and is a federal institution of higher learning in Ilorin. Currently, there are 15 faculties at the University of Ilorin, including the faculties of arts, management sciences, agriculture, engineering and technology, law, veterinary medicine, law, social sciences, basic medical sciences, clinical sciences, communication and information technology, physical sciences, life sciences, environmental sciences, and others. The tuition at this first-generation university isn’t more than 50,000 naira.
10. University of Jos
In 1975, the federal University of Jos was established in the Plateau state. The university of Jos provides numerous programs, such as bachelor’s, postgraduate, master’s, and doctoral degrees in a variety of subject areas.
One of the oldest University in Nigeria, the University of Jos, has produced numerous accomplished lawyers, physicians, engineers, and many more professions. The school provides many amenities, such as a library, student housing, a foreign exchange program, and administrative services.
