UNIABUJA GETS FIRST FEMALE ACTING VICE CHANCELLOR

Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi has been appointed as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja. The announcement was made during the university’s valedictory Senate meeting on Wednesday, held at the Abuja campus.

At just 41 years old, Professor Maikudi, a respected scholar in International Law, previously held the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics. She steps into the role as Professor Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, prepares to conclude his tenure in three days. He noted that her appointment is interim and subject to approval by the Governing Council.

In her acceptance speech, Maikudi expressed deep gratitude to the Senate members for their trust and support. “I extend my deepest respect and appreciation to all of you for your unwavering commitment and strong support,” she said.

Professor Maikudi was born on January 31, 1983, in Zaria and has achieved remarkable milestones in her career. She is the youngest female Professor of Law in Northwestern Nigeria and at the University of Abuja.

Her academic journey began at Queen’s College, Lagos, followed by an LLB from the University of Reading, UK, an LLM from the London School of Economics, UK, a BL from the Nigerian Law School, Abuja, and a Ph.D. from the University of Abuja.

In 2007, Aisha completed her National Youth Service Corps at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s Corporate Secretariat and Legal Division. She joined the University of Abuja in 2008 as a Lecturer II and quickly rose through the ranks. By 2014, she became the first female and youngest Head of the Faculty of Law’s Department. In 2018, she was appointed the first female and youngest Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law and later served as the pioneer Director at the University of Abuja.

Currently, she holds the distinction of being the youngest Professor at the University of Abuja and Nigeria and the first female Professor of Law in the North West and at the university. Her expertise lies in United Nations Law, on which she has extensively published and taught. She has also been a key figure in developing the Postgraduate course on United Nations Law and has guided numerous students in their academic pursuits. Additionally, she has over 12 years of experience teaching Company Law.

Professor Maikudi is actively involved in various professional organizations, including the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Nigerian Law Teachers Association (NLTA), and the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA). She is married and has children.
