LASU ISSUES IMPORTANT NOTICE TO FINAL YEAR STUDENTS ON SIGNING-OUT FUNFAIR

Lagos State University Senate Decisions on Signing-Out Funfair by Final Year Students

At its 306th Statutory Meeting held on Thursday, 25th January 2024, the Lagos State University Senate reviewed a report (Ref: LASU/SEN/ST.306/063) on the signing-out funfair conducted by final-year students after the Second Semester examinations of the 2022/2023 Academic Session.

During the meeting, the Senate noted the following:

1. Disregard for University Rules: The Student Affairs Division observed that many students flagrantly disregarded university regulations during the signing-out events.

2. Unauthorized Guests: Final-year students invited non-students to the campus to celebrate with them.

3. Indecent Behavior: Some students engaged in inappropriate behavior, including consuming alcohol, smoking weed and cigarettes, using shisha, and dressing indecently.

4. Unauthorized Equipment: Disc Jockeys and musical equipment were brought onto the school premises without permission.

5. Exams Disruption: These activities disrupted ongoing examinations and coincided with the presence of National Universities Commission (NUC) Accreditation Teams on campus.

6. Traffic and Congestion: The influx of students and their guests caused significant traffic congestion on campus.

7. Crowd Control Issues: The Student Affairs Division, Security Unit, and some Deans faced challenges in managing the crowds.

8. Campus Cleanliness: The campus was left dirty and untidy after the events.

The Senate expressed serious concerns and condemned the behavior exhibited by the graduating students during these events.

Decisions by the Senate:

1. Undertaking Requirement: Henceforth, all final-year students are required to sign an undertaking not to organize any funfair or party under the guise of signing out.

2. Restrictions on Events: If a signing-out event is to be organized, students must adhere to the following rules:

– No music should be played.

– No food, cake, or drinks should be brought in from outside the premises.

– No visitors or non-students should be invited.

– No canopies or tents should be brought onto the campus.

3. Consequences of Non-Compliance: Any student or group of students found violating these regulations will be rusticated for one academic session. Additionally, all final-year examinations written by the student(s) involved will be canceled. This means the student(s) will have to pay another tuition fee, re-register for the courses, and retake the final-year examinations.
